Charlie awoke in the black of night to find herself upright in bed, her heart pounding. Had she heard a bloodcurdling scream, or had she dreamed it? She’d anticipated that her first night in the new house would be a bit creepy with unfamiliar noises, creaks, and groans, but this was no house noise—it was terrifying! She clutched the bedsheet to her chest and listened: There it was again…inside the house. The cats. Something was terribly wrong. What could it be?
She jumped out of bed and ran toward the sounds, not even pausing when she jammed her toe on a box at the foot of the bed. She wished she could grab a baseball bat, but she had no idea in which box anything was packed. She could hear hissing and a strange high-pitched, threatening “singing” she’d never heard before. Was one of the cats hurt? Lovesick? Were they facing down a vicious axe murderer? Maybe she should be running in the opposite direction. But curiosity and fear for her cats drove Charlie around the corner and into the music room. Minuet and Tango dashed past her, seeking cover while Jazz—looking inflated to twice her normal size—confronted a dark and shadowy intruder alone. The uninvited cat saw Charlie coming, turned tail, and scooted through the kitchen and out the pet door, hotly pursued by a cream-colored she-devil that had once been Charlie’s diminutive, sweet companion, Jazz.
Quickly blocking the pet door with the piece of board in the garage she finally realized was intended for that purpose, Charlie went to check on Jazz and the others. It took quite a while for Jazz’s fur to relax and for her to return to normal size, but though she was tense, she seemed uninjured. It took even longer to find Tango and Minuet in their various hiding spots; neither could be coaxed out. But they didn’t seem damaged. Charlie breathed a sigh of relief. It was over.
